One of the many anticipated events of the celebration is “The Lantern Parade” (Desfile de Faroles) which is in remembrance of when on September 14th, 1821 delegates gathered in Guatemala, sang their freedom, lit lanterns and received the Independence Torch. The ‘Independence Torch’ accompanied the delivery of the news of independence across the countries of Central America in 1821; which has now become a national symbol of the country. A highly anticipated event throughout Central America is “The Torch Run”. It imitates the actual historical event with the lighting of the torch on September 9th in Guatemala then travels to Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua by foot and passing from person to person. Then on the eve of Independence Day, the torch reaches its final destination in the Capital of Costa Rica. On September 15th the streets are filled with children doing traditional dances while wearing traditional cloths ; parades of dancers, color guards and school bands. Yet, their are many differences between the two countries in both how they gained their independence. For example, Costa Rica really did not have a part in the fight for independence while Honduras fought against Spanish rule for years, also Costa Rica never really gained independence until 1838 while HOnduras gained its independence on September 15th, 1821. Even though Costa Rica and Honduras gained independence in different ways their forms of celebration are very similar. Both countries having dancing, parades, and music. Also, schools and school children get involved and their Independence Days are treated like a national holiday with schools and workplaces being closed for the festivities. Lastly, both countries have the Torch Run, and even though the torch reaches each countries at different days it is a big part of both countries
