Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

“I’m gonna loose the accent!” said Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoya De La Rosa Ramirez from the hit Disney sitcom The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In that very moment, viewers of the show once again laughed (or sighed) at Esteban’s inability to speak with proper English grammar. Granted, Esteban was new to speaking English – hence why he wanted to lose his accent – so calling him out on it was neither polite nor reasonable. People will occasionally make grammar mistakes when writing or communicating, and that is understandable. However, grammar is important to teach to students because it is closely related to detail orientation, an individual’s credibility, and is vital in terms of communication.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
