Cross-Functional PI Team Paper

I think a cross-functional PI team should be convened to address the patient type coding issues between the ED and the cath lab. A cross-functional team is necessary because the system in need of improvement involves more than one department. The team should be made up of individuals from the catheter lab to specifically include a scribe and a lab manager or supervisor; the Emergency Department including an admitting clerk and their supervisor; Administration to include someone from operations like the Medical Director (Chief Clinical Officer); and someone from Human Resources, specifically a manager in the employee and labor relations department. Based on research, it would also be beneficial to not only include a member of the Quality Management Department but also make that person the team leader because experience leading similar performance improvement projects increases the …show more content…
In the research conducted by Easton and Rosenzweig, it was determined that the extent to which team members have prior experience working together has not been found to matter in improvement teams, hence the importance of the team leader to understand and guide the process of PI.
The inclusion of the scribe from the cath lab and the admitting clerk from the ED are vital on this PI team because they are closest to the process and are best qualified to accomplish the process review (Shaw & Carter, 2015). They are the ones dealing with this process and the problems and issues involved with patient coding.
