The next day, everyone woke up and began their daily routine hoping that all the chaos from the recent past was over. All the ranch hands went out to do their duties, and Candy got to cleaning the bunkhouse. All were working except Crooks, Crooks was nowhere to be seen. Nobody seemed to notice as all was calm on the ranch, it was almost as if everyone has forgotten what happened yesterday, and they were just working as hard as they do any other day. Until Candy comes outside screaming the unthinkable. “He’s dead! The boss is dead, Crooks murdered the boss!” Candy screamed in terror. Then everyone broke into panic. All organization that had just been on the ranch was lost. Everyone stopped doing their job and met near the bunkhouse to …show more content…
“What happened here?” asked Slim
“He kept callin’ me a negro an’ saying I’m useless to this ranch.” Crooks said to Slim. “I done had enough of it an’ I snapped.”
“I see.” replied Slim as he stood up and walked away. “Everyone get out. Carlson you go out an’ start digging a grave for the boss.”
Everyone listened and did as they were told. Later that day they buried the boss and had a nice dinner in remembrance of him.
“So who’s gon’ be in charge round here now that the boss is gone?” asked Candy.
The group of guys then got to talking and they all agreed that Slim should be in charge of the ranch.
“What are we gon’ do about Crooks? He can’t just get away with this!” blurted Curley. The group discussed this for quite some time and finally came up with a decision. “We’ve decided to keep Crooks on the ranch.” said Slim. “We need workers on the ranch an’ gettin’ rid of him won't help none of us now will it?” With that being said, all the men headed to their bunks and went to sleep. The next day started, Slim was in charge and all was in order. It was almost identical to how the previous day started, only everyone was there and it was a happy place. A place where everyone got
