Richard Lewis is a British linguist and he wrote a book “When Cultures Collide”. In his book, he plotted countries in relation to three categories. The first one is linear-active, the second one is multi-active, the third one is reactive. These categories conclude lots of countries.
On my opinion, to a certain extent, his points were right. But some details in this article, I disagree with him. I also have my own point of view.
First of all, the model of Linear-Active is German. I totally agree with that. All over world, German is the most rigorous nationality. In this thought, everyone must respect their parents, the old and teachers. When they talk to you, you must listen quietly, when they finish their question, then you can answer them. So, many neighbouring countries sent their officials as student to learn culture and technology. As a result, many Asian influenced by Confucianism. Not only their thought but also behavior. Japan is a type reactive country. On Japanese street and office even public transportation, usually they keep quiet. They show their best respect to everyone. If you want to buy something, you need ask question, otherwise they don’t interrupt your shopping. Almost all tourists are satisfied with Japanese service. They will listen most of the time and then provide best service. On the other hand, Implicit art is the primary aesthetic pursuit in the history of ancient Chinese culture.
