When parents take their kids to school they are less likely thinking about the possibility of their child/children getting shot. The same goes for college students, they are presumably not thinking about getting shot while they are on campus. Schools are theoretically a safe destination for students and staff. Conversely, where there are people there are also crises. When shootings happen it is covered by media outlets. This can cause one to think that there is an increase in school shootings. “It is determined that mass shootings in the United States have been steadily increasing over time, with a dramatic increase since 2008. However, only around 30% of the mass shootings in this study took place in schools or college campuses” (2). Even though this is good news it is still imperative to have a plan to put into action when catastrophes happen. There are different strategies to handle school shootings. Schools will usually have a plan set in place, and then after a shooting happens they reevaluate and update the plan. For example, after a shooting at Virginia Tech, it was noted that it is necessary to identify potential shooters before it happens, support is needed for public health preparedness for a mass causality incident, and psychological functioning needs to be evaluated afterward
