It is the responsibility of the criminal justice system to accurately punish violators of the law and make sure that victims of the crime committed is paid recompense for the losses they may have endured (Kramer, 2018). When there are not ethical standards, law enforcement personnel and officers of the court could potentially operate in a manner that may be biased or show partiality. For example, if there was a judge that allowed the defendant to pay them to rule in his or her favor, that defendant could potentially not be convicted for his or her crime. Another example would be an attorney that was biased against his or her client. The attorney could manipulate the evidence, sway the witness into testifying a certain way or interfere with the trial in order to obtain the ruling he or she desired (Kramer, 2018). Studying ethics and having an understanding of ethical considerations is a necessity for the criminal justice system. Not only does the ethical considerations include the policymakers and officers of the courts, but it also includes the citizens and their rights regarding privacy, the rights of prisoners while they serve their time and applying laws and procedures of justice …show more content…
There are several ethical issues that law enforcement officers and officers of the courts must consider when making hasty or deliberate decisions. These individuals should be asking themselves the following questions: 1) Are the actions that are about to be taken in compliance with the law? 2) Can the choices that are made be justified on a legal and a moral level? 3) What affect does the decision made have on other individuals involved in the case , as well as, the community? 4) what are the precedents that the decisions made set? 5) Does the decision undermine principles ethically or legally (Kramer, 2018)? When the criminal justice system and officers of the law apply ethical approaches, the public is served fairly and justly, the quality of peace the officers have is improved, problem solving becomes more effective, the community stands together with a sense of respect and support for the justice system, and the criminal justice systems portrays a stronger role in the eyes of the citizens.
