Crime Scene Investigation: Chemiluminol

As often seen on television shows involving crime scene investigations such as CSI, luminol is initially a yellow solid chemiluminescent compound that glows with a bluish-green light when reacted most commonly with a metal ion such as haemoglobin. It was originally synthesized in 1908 by a scientist from Heidelberg, Germany known as Schmitz. In 1928, a German chemist named H.O. Albrecht identified that adding an oxidising agent such as hydrogen peroxide to the solid compound would trigger the reaction and produce the chemiluminescent light. A few years later in 1936, scientists Glueu and Pfannstiel discovered that the iron in haemoglobin produced vibrant/visible chemiluminesence.
