Creon Speech Analysis

Creon’s definition of a good leader is someone who has the power to rule alone, over all people. For example, in the midst of Creon's insightful speech about the jurisdiction of Antigone, he questions his son, Haemon, “if I permit my own family to rebel, how [will] I earn the world’s obedience?” (Sophocles Scene 3 ll. 30-1 emphasis added). Creon must start with his own family’s obedience before he moves on to earn the world’s obedience. If the people most proximate to Creon reverence and follow his command, then Creon will gain the confidence to make much more decisive rulings so that the latter of the population will acknowledge him as a good king. Furthermore, Creon explains his views of government to Haemon and exclaims, “whoever is chosen

Creon values principles above all else. In Creon’s speech as king for the first time, he discusses the deaths of his two nephews, former king Etocles and Polyneices. Polyneices had created an army to betray his homeland on an attempt to capture his brother’s kingdom, they both fought gallantly and died in combat, Creon then states in his speech that no one is to touch the traitor Polyneices, and Etocles is to be buried with respect, he then later proclaims, “These are my principles, at any rate, that is why I have made the following decisions”(Sophocles 945). No matter what Creon actually thought, principles are how he made his “decisions.” Principles are what Creon lives by, no matter how he feels about the subject, he always makes the correct…

He presumes that since he is the king, he is also the most authoritative person in Thebes. However, this is incorrect; although he is the king, it doesn’t mean that he has the sovereignty or the justification to reprimand others. Once again, Creon’s lust for power is perspicuous - he knows that he only holds a certain amount of power, but his desire to have more causes him to put others down and make them feel inferior. Rulers with this kind of attitude only end up harming themselves, mistreating others, or coming to a tragic realization, such as the one that Creon faces when he recognizes that his decision to sentence Antigone to death only…

As an American society, we often take for granted our acceptance of religious diversity. In many eras and under many empires, such tolerance was not the case. For example, variant religions or beliefs were not readily accepted in Ancient Greece, such as is shown in Sophocles' play Antigone. Comparing Creon from Oedipus Rex to president Obama a contemporary real life figure has helped me understand that Sophocles message is that the act of humility and modesty will get you further than hubris which is the tragic flaw within the tragic hero that brings about his downfall. The character of Creon is portrayed as an honest, even tempered. Creon does not commit the sin of hubris throughout the play which stands out in contrast to the other characters in the novel such as locasta and Oedipus. Some characteristic in which he does not show hubris of which Sophocles says he will cause the downfall of the hero is his ability to follow and abide by the law. This was seen when he responds to Oedipus request to cast him out of Thebes.…
