Taking into account Creighton University’s dedication to a diverse educational community, I consider myself a student with varying talents, abilities, experiences, opinions, and backgrounds.
One aspect of my life that separates me from others is my involvement in collegiate athletics. I competed in wrestling at both the Division I and Division III levels. Through wrestling, I have obtained a large amount of experience that will help me in physical therapy school. One of the greatest American wrestlers and coaches of all time, Dan Gable, once said, “Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy.” While life is in no way easy, this quote describes how wrestling prepares someone for the struggles in life. Participating in wrestling requires an incredible amount of self-discipline in order to overcome the physical and emotional barriers presented. The origin of my love for physical therapy started after my first exposure to physical therapy when I tore my ACL my junior year of high school. After my ACL reconstruction surgery, I got in contact with a local physical therapist named Andrew Bartek. A graduate of the first doctorate of physical therapy class at Creighton in 1996, Andrew has been a mentor to me since I walked into his clinic. Due to his compassion, determination, and knowledge, I was placed in an environment to succeed. Not only did he care about facilitating my rehabilitation, but he also cared about me as an individual. Since then I have had three more major injuries, including a second ACL tear, and every time I go to Andrew he demonstrates the same qualities he exhibited during my first visit. It is people like him that make me passionate about the field and excited that I will have the opportunity to wake up every morning doing what I
