The difference between having a Creator mindset and having a Victim mindset is the difference between success and failure. In his book, On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life, Dr. Skip Downing defines Creators as people who make choices that result in the outcomes they want to achieve. He defines Victims, however, as people who leave their choices to chance, reacting to things that happen in their lives, instead of making things happen, which often has unfavorable results. If I want to have a successful life and achieve my goals, I must adopt the Creator mindset. Around three years ago Jackson decided that he wanted to write music, but he didn't know how to play an instrument, and he had no vocal training. After talking to him about his dream, I learned that he bought a ukulele as his first instrument to help understand some of the basics before moving into the guitar. He quickly picked it up, learning the basics of chord structures and enough theory to make the move into the guitar a relatively easy one. After only a year since he started learning, Jackson was performing in coffee houses with original songs and covers. I remember seeing him one time when I visited Georgia; I was amazed at how confidently he sang and played. Late last year and going into this year, he informed me that he was working with a couple local producers to record an original EP. I knew that Jackson wasn't acting like someone flying by the seat of his pants and hoping for the best; he was being a Creator: a hard-working individual who, no matter the obstacles, was able to go after his goals because he made it so.
