As the leaves crunch beneath my feet I see the vibrant colors of fall all around me. My heart pounds rapidly as I enter the room of death. A strange smell of mildew emerges and I try to remember the scent of crisp air. The pure and satisfying taste of a drop of water satisfies me. I hear music pounding and teammates gasping for air. Outside, trees off in the distance have become shades of vibrant reds and yellows. The lingering gray sky above me casts a gloomy shadow. A sharp wind swirls around me as the sun begins to set, disappearing behind the trees. Everything becomes dark and soft raindrops fall, landing on my bare skin as I shiver for warmth.

The big cottonwood tree stood apart from a small grove of winter bare cottonwoods which grew in the wide, sandy, arroyo. He had been dead for a day or more, and the sheep had wandered and scattered up and down the arroyo. Leon and his brother-in-law, Ken, gathered the sheep and left them in the pen at the sheep camp before they returned to the cottonwood tree.…

Rain had begun to fall again. Thick drops of crystalline water fell slowly and then all at once, striking the tin roof of Susan Mallard's Seattle home. Once again, she was sitting in her armchair reading whatever book she had plucked from her shelf without looking, turning the pages absently as the rain poured harder around her. Despite, this being a nightly routine, she never actually read the books, she would sit for hours looking at what might as well have been empty pages. Written words on a page contained no essence for her anymore, she had pondered over them for years and had bled them dry of any meaning they had.…
