He would protect and defend his young and would love his family like he would his rifle.
“Please uncle Chris, just a few more minutes?” The cousin of the family, george was always the spoilsport of the few. Always skipping birthdays and celebrations and practically sleeping 24/7.
“No, I said to wake up!” Jeff, the 12 year old slowly waltzed out the room with the expression of a bear after hibernation on his face.

“Your uncle has agreed to take us on a special hunting trip, just the four of us.” This was truly a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for Jeff, he’s never used a .22 gage rifle before. He glanced outside, watching the september leaves as they descended from the aged oak.

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

There was low-toned talk among the troops. The officers were impatient and snappy, their countenances clouded with the tales of misfortune. The troops, sifting through the forest, were sullen. Bullets whizzed overhead hell-bent on hitting their targets. James pressed himself against the mud wall of the trench, as if by doing so it would take him away from the corner of hell that his old naive self had willingly entered. Allied planes tore through the open sky with kamikazes right on their tails. Gaping holes left in the ground by heavy artillery were full with stagnant water and the rotting corpses of dead soldiers, their weapons bent and rusted displaying a haunting past that time wouldn't forget.…

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…

The group of friends standing right in front of us jumped and sang every word of the songs being sung. We were only 30 seconds into the first song he sang, there was no one in the crowd in sight just standing there. Days before, I remember counting down for the day to approach. Nothing was ever the same when I turned on my computer that morning, and I made a decision that would change the very course of history... It began as a typical day; soldiers parading down the streets, gray skies above... I turned on my laptop and opened my browser, but then an icon popped up at the bottom of my screen. When compared to other nations America is still a very young country, but what it is lacking in age, it more than makes up for in depth and dimensionality of character. The American population is composed of 319 million people with 319 million different backgrounds and experiences which together make up a cumulative American identity. Although the identity of America is subjective to every person who experiences it, certain values and ideas such as the conflict between good and evil, the advancement of democratic ideals, and the Hero’s story are perpetuated both through the celebration of real life heroes and the development of fictional protagonists. The triumph of good over evil is the quintessential theme of storytelling, and its place…
