The predawn light was burning the stars. Stars, gleaming at me within a frame formed by canyon walls. Resting in the dirt I gaze up, observing the trees as their shadowy bodies sway in the morning breeze. Tranquillity frightens me the most because peace leads to thinking and thinking steers to the prison behind my eyes. I don’t want to remember. I don’t want to think. For fifty-two days I have clawed and jammed my way up these walls. My fist is a wooden club that I force into cracks. Soft and fragile hands have mutated into hard and unyielding tools. Before it happened I would have revelled in the strength. My ego used to be important but now I only care about death.
I allow my mind to wander, to let it look at the prison inside. Agonizingly

I only watched helplessly as the turquoise vase wobbled off of its shelf, seemingly falling in slow motion until it hit the cold stone, erupting in a firework of glass. He swiveled his head around, eyes widened, pale face, and trembling hands. My hands automatically went up to clasp my mouth, muffling a scream that never came out. He looked at me, and I looked at him. I looked at him, and he looked at me.…

It is dark. It always is. My mind, like the hell-lit cave, is ignorant to life outside of darkness. I see mere shapes and speak but madness; the language I had once known as meaningless as a singular grain of sand on a sprawling shore. Life is but a farce, a fable constructed by the imagination of others.…

As we progress, this journal topic will discuss other social problems pertaining to the incarceration of African American youth and other minorities and what are the factors that contribute to youth committing crimes. The United States Criminal Justice System has countless things to improve and it has been compared to other countries to see the difference. The United States prisons and jails were compared to German prisons and there is a huge contrast between the two countries. The way the Germany inmates are treated is way more comfortable and relaxed than America’s. “The men serving time wore their own clothes, not prison uniforms” (Turner and Jeremy).…

The Problem with For-Profit Prison Private or for profit prisons are facilities that are contracted with the local, state or federal government to operate correctional facilities. In the 1980’s President Reagan said that government was the problem and proposed privatizing many institutions (Selman & Leighton, 2010). According to the American Civil Liberties Union, currently about 6% of state prisoners and 16% of federal inmates are in a privatized institutions. The most common argument in favor of for-profit prisons is that private industry is far more efficient than government and thus can operate facilities more more cheaply than the government.…

Topic Reflection Whilst writing these reflective journals, I noticed a number of recurring themes present in the aspects of punishment I studied. For the purposes of this essay, I will focus on the two most prominent themes I identified; first, the notion that the internal prison environment is ill-equipped to reduce crime and second, how imprisonment’s rise in recent years may be impeding the state’s ability to respond to crime. On the Internal Prison Environment The first reflective journal established that the internal prison environment is highly criminogenic; the fact that 34.7% of prisoners in Victoria returned to prison within two years of release (in the 2002-3 period) supports this assertion (Holland, Pointon and Ross, 2007, p.13).…
