Suddenly, Ivanna’s hind legs launch her upright to full height, like a spring unwinding. Standing up, she hurls her paws at the glass. The alternating pattern of right paw, left paw elongates past her head as the long nails scrr scrr down the window. Smacking down, each powerful thud sounds of a hailstorm. Her heavy, throaty holler of a bark echoes, a deep RAR, RAR, RAR. She jerks upwards with every bark, the noise shaking her as if she were going to leap out the window. Her paws drag until she has no choice but to put them back on the couch. Her head lowers and her butt returns to the couch though she growls lowly. It’s quiet, a low hum riddled with warning to the other dog if it comes near our house. Rippling through her, the base of her throat flutters. She settles back down to the couch, muscles on her legs widening and skin sagging. The dog on the other side disappears. Her eyebrows unclench, and her face loosens, teeth sheathing back into her mouth. Her head swivels back to gaze at us, eyes shining.
However, Ivanna takes one look at the face of displeasure my mother pulls and twists around to plunk down to the floor. With her tail flattened between her legs, she paws my mother’s legs. Her ears flatten and her brown eyes widen. Her whine is a shrill, saccharine hmm hmm as my mother rolls her eyes. My mother turns away and moves to leave. Ivanna’s ears raise now that my mother’s back is turned. Only the little pitter-patter of Ivanna’s paws follow my mother, her tail wagging high and ears bent back so the pink inside is
