Creation Story In The Old Testament

Giving purpose to life is valuable and eases the mind of many questions. However, how is a creation story to be interpreted? The creation story in the Old Testament is a story that has many meanings behind the text. The meanings of the text strongly convey their messages, and possibly impact future cultures. The story seems to go back and forth between what existed before this creation. The very first verse states “God created the heavens and the earth” then the story moves to state “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness”. This was an interesting comparison because it seems God has created the heavens and earth, but then creates mankind in “our” image. Who existed with God before the earth was created. Was heaven created, and then earth created in the image of God and the angels? These two verses encourage deeper questions on what existed before God created this earth. The message of these verses could stand on their own, and should not have been read together. When comparing the two verses a point made by Dennis Bratcher in his article came to mind. Bratcher stresses that the verses should be read in sections and not looked at as a whole. If the story is looked at as whole then messages can be missed. I mostly agree with him, but I believe it is important to focus on both …show more content…
God states “Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you” which made me wonder why it is emphasized that the man rules the woman. This really made me wonder how this has affected later generations. In the current century this could empower men to miss treat women. This could have resulted in poor treatment of women around this time period. Religions are often followed to define the moral vs. immoral line. According to Genesis 16 men ruling over their wives is moral and should be implemented. I would like to know what purpose this served in the religion, and why it passed down with the

Hesiod's story of creation, which concentrates on the gods is different than Ovid's story of creation because in Hesiod story of creation, the areas of Earth seem to have happened by chance with no guidance, the Gods mated by chance, and have created things with no set purpose. Mankind is just there. According to Ovid in the beginning there appears to be guidance with not as much chaos. Things seem to be in somewhat order and he assumes that we should know how the Gods came to be.…

The article that I have chosen is the story about Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis and King Esarhaddon of Assyria, who ruled Western Asia from 680-669 BCE. This article analyze and compare the parallel between both important figures. According to the Bible's Book of Genesis, Joseph was the younger son of Jacob. He had ten elder brothers who were envious of him since Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son with his second wife, Rachel. There was a plot against Joseph in which his half-brothers decided to throw him in a pit and tell their father, Jacob, that Joseph was dead.…

Society’s structure relied heavily on religious doctrine that determined gender roles. According to the Bible, the female body was created from a man’s body. Thus, this was interpreted as women being inferior to men because they were created second and from man. Moreover, a woman is also responsible for the first sin in the world; Eve offered the forbidden fruit to Adam in the Bible. Women were supposed to be silent, obedient and submissive.…

During this time, legislation and and church ruling emerged, dictating a woman’s role and how she should manage her own life without the supervision of a man. For example, in medieval Europe, women could only manage their own finances if they became a femme sole, ‘which means widowed in modern terms. While men would work and fight wars, women stayed home and fulfilled the roles of childbearing and rearing. This often meant women were subjected to greater scrutiny than men and were afforded less privileges. For example, in royal society, a man was permitted to have a mistress, but a woman having an affair could result in her being banished and sent to a nunnery or execution.”…

From the Christian account of creation, the woman was created from a man as his helper. Her purpose was to be a companion to Adam that he will not be lonely. This marks the beginning of inequity based on religious scripture. The role women play is defined from the beginning of religion by God and various books in the old and new Testament affirm this relationship. Quran gives men the role of keeping women under control at all times, and this continues to happen in most Islamic countries where women are regarded inferior to men and their rights not as important as those of men faith (class lecture: Women in the Early Nineteenth…

Biblical Creation as a Worldview Should Biblical Creationism be presented parallel with evolution as a valid explanation of the origin of the universe? The secular system is accepting evolution as fact, when evolution is really a worldview in which one sees the facts. The argument can then be made that if one must exert faith to believe evolution, then Biblical Creationism should not be disqualified as an equal explanation. National evangelist and former atheist Kirk Cameron (2004) writes, “Evolution is a religion that is believed by men and women… I was one of them until I was willing to investigate the facts” (p. 418).…

In the book The Drama of Scripture by Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen, they take the Bible and break down all of the stories. Bartholomew and Goheen start off with explaining the Creation story. In Act 1 they talk about the importance of names, especially God’s name, and the men describe how God made humankind in his own image. They do a great job of examining each little thing that God does towards Adam and Eve. Such as, God showing his immense love for his creations by giving Adam a partner after realizing that Adam was lonely because all of the other animals had a partner to be with as read in Genesis 2:18-25.…
