It is necessary to follow a systematic approach in order to design an effective training process. The process begins with a critical first step, which is to conduct a needs assessment. A needs assessment will determine problem areas or gaps that require an appropriate solution for improvement. The needs assessment involves organizational analysis, person analysis, and task analysis.

Although these methods yield many advantages, they also have disadvantages; or challenges, if you will. The challenges I encountered while observing were my own biases—I had my own ideas on how things should be. Additionally, the data observed is difficult to interpret, and it was very time consuming. Another challenge encountered during the interviews were that the responses may also be biased. Additionally, due to time and geographical constraints, I was only able to visit one site. Finally, the survey offered its own challenges: were the respondents honest? Were they in a hurry? Were the questions understandable? Also, it has been noted that respondents may harbor fear of reprisal if survey results are made known (McNamara, 2005).
