Course Assistant Reflection

My third goal is to use my experience as a course assistant in my first year to observed the inner cogs of running a course and teaching styles in order to build my own ability to organize a successful class as well as my own pedagogy theories. By grading and thus experiencing two divergent courses, of opposite sizes, and different course levels, I realized the various nuances of how to teach, organize, and handle class policy. It also affirmed the difficulty of teaching and my need to learn more. Simply observing two courses is not enough experience to state that I am a capable teacher. Demonstrating that I can function as an assistant in undergraduate courses will be a vital addition to my CV, but it will also demonstrate a finer level of

My job as a chemistry teaching assistant also required a combination of personal and practical skills and ability to be assertive without arrogance. Each week the students had to submit a heavy load of assignments, and keeping track of grading alone required a developed level in time efficiency, accountability, and organizing skills. I had to be knowledgeable enough about the subject to comprise worksheet, practice exams, review sessions, and grade fairly. I also had to know how to communicate that knowledge to the students: proving feedback on misunderstood requirements, clearly answering any questions they had about the material. I knew an accelerated chemistry course can be overwhelming, I always encouraged and motivated the students when…

Teaching is not only sharing knowledge and providing guidance for people to understand, it is also about learning. I’ve had prior teaching opportunities and have done a number of work-related, in-service education sessions in my place of employment, most considered informal. Presenting and teaching to an unfamiliar audience in the community, however, it’s a whole different experience. It’s an experience where I learned a great deal. This paper will discuss the overall teaching experience including; topic selected, the rationale and how it was presented, the learning theory applied and what materials were used during the session and the audience’s evaluation, as well as my personal evaluation of this valuable experience.…

As our course went on and I started to understand business some more I then realized why there were certain things that were shaping my views about my jobs. I believe that we live in a very competitive society today. High school students are put under a tremendous amount of stress to be the “best of the best”. Many of my peers feel if they do not take every AP class offered and graduate with perfect grades then they will never be able to succeed. Due to schedules overloaded with AP classes, students have little to no time outside of school and often forgo the importance of finding balance by participating in the liberal arts.…

To complete the simulation, I decided to go home. This was to avoid the need to travel as well as to be in an environment where no one was informed about the assignment. As I drove home, I created my story of how I would explain my new condition to my parent. Considering I had work during the first half of the day, my story became, “I lifted a heavy box of files at work from a high shelf without positioning my body correctly. As I tried to take the box down from the shelf, I lost control which resulted in my injury.”…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…
