Counterpoint Essay

After reviewing two articles, I support the counterpoint argument. The “counterpoint” article provides several valid points to why cervical screening in women older than 65 years of age should not be recommended. The article stated that preventive resources, such as Pap smears and screening, should be directed to high-risk population, “where real benefit can be obtained (Isidean et al., 1025). In unscreened populations, the peak period of cervical cancer risk amongst women is estimated to be around 35-55 years, which is still 10-year younger than the age cut-off limit. Women who are older than 65 years old, even with consistent screening histories, the prevalence of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) is low, and the chances of cervical cancer to develop is rare. If a woman is infected with HPV virus, it would take approximately 15-20 years for the infection to develop into cancer. Therefore, it is not likely for a woman, who is 65 or older, to suffer from cervical cancer if she acquired HPV infection during that age. While several factors can contribute to the result of getting cervical cancer at the age of 65 …show more content…
However, the article used two groups that are non-comparable. One group consisted of women, who are over the age 65, are unscreened or inadequately screened, and at high risks for diseases; whereas the other group consisted of women, who are also in this age group, but very well-screened and at low risk for diseases. The article also suggests that older women, who are not at low risk of cervical cancer following a history of negative screening results, may benefit from continued screening. This point was also presented in the counterpoint article. The counterpoint article specifically stated that the new recommendation does not apply to high-risk population. Also, if someone would like to continue screening, she is more than welcome to do

A very helpful resource my preceptor utilizes is the ASCCP.org website. ASCCP stands for American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. This website provides guidelines and algorithms to help establish an appropriate treatment plan for patients with abnormal pap smears. These recommendations were developed and approved by a steering committee made of national professional organizations, government agencies, and advocacy organizations. They used literature reviews, evidence based practices, and risk-based assessments to develop the guidelines (American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology [ASCCP], 2013).…

Introduction Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is highly contagious. HPV infections cause genital warts and cancers to the outlet of the womb (cervix), birth canal (vagina), opening of the birth canal (vulva), and anus. There are over 100 types of HPV. Unless wartlike lesions are present in the throat or there are genital warts that you can see or feel, HPV usually does not cause symptoms. It is possible to be infected for long periods and pass it on to others without knowing it.…

In 2012, there were two FDA-approved vaccines released to target the four most common HPV strains. Almost 70 percent of cervical cancer cases and 90 percent of genital warts cases are associated with these four strains of HPV. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends vaccinating young girls and boys between 11 and 12 years of age, before becoming sexually active. Additionally, ACIP recommends vaccination of HPV4 for males aged 13 through 26 years who have not been previously vaccinated or have not accomplished the three-dose series. There is currently a debate within states to mandate school HPV vaccination, which is determined by each individual state.…

Being declared as a pre-nursing major, this counter argument is not something that should be even placed into the picture. A nurse is someone with a soft loving touch. They are the person who doesn’t care about getting all the credit of caring a patient or resident back to full health. Becoming a nurse is a dream for many people who are compassionate about healing, who could care less about the reward. A nurse’s reward is seeing a patient be able to walk again, or even being able to see Mrs. Jones use the bathroom continently without soiling her own clothes.…

When ideas are created, they are just thoughts; yet no one ever knows just how extreme those thoughts can become. In the book Divergent, written by Veronica Roth, there are many ideas that cross the line of good and bad. A good idea has become extreme when the outcome has a negative influence on people or a civilization. Paragraph 1: The main idea that went to the extreme and created a rubber band effect is the idea of having factions. There are five factions; Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless.…

Rhode Island’s HPV Vaccination Requirement: A Topic of Controversy Human Papiloma (HPV) infects about 14 million Americans a year; however, only certain strains of the virus—known as high risk strains—are carcinogenic (Vaccinating Your Preteen or Teen, 2015). Others are more or less benign. Cervical cancer in females is the major carcinoma linked to high risk strains of HPV which can be transmitted through sexual contact. Other cancers associated with the virus include vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal and oropharyngeal cancer (Vaccinating Your Preteen or Teen, 2015). Since the introduction of HPV vaccines—such as Gardasil and Ceravix—in 2006, HPV transmission and associated cancer rates have significantly decreased (Marsa, 2014).These vaccines…
