The Count of Monte Cristo, formerly known as Edmond Dantes, is a very significant character in the novel. After spending fourteen long years in the Chateau d’If, he is set on getting revenge on those that wronged him. In the beginning of the novel, Edmond is seen as a friendly, humble yet naïve young man who is eager to embark on his future. Dantes confesses early in the story, “I’m only nineteen…and I know very little. I wasn’t destined to play any important role in life. Anything I am and anything I may be in the future, if I receive the position I hope for, I owe to Monsieur Morrel. Thanks to the harsh treatment given to him and the Abbe Busoni, he was no longer a young, naïve sailor. After escaping the dreadful prison and becoming the Count of Monte Cristo, he was now a vengeful and well educated, man. As of now, The Count of Monte Cristo is viewed as a sophisticated and fascinating man. He never ceases to impress others of high class. “Everyone looked at Monte Cristo in amazement. He spoke so simply that it was obvious that he was either mad or was telling the truth.” (Dumas 169) Monte Cristo is looked up to and respected in society because of his wealth and power. While to his enemies, as his revenge plot continues, he is perceived as a manipulative and horrific form of karma. Caderousse, once he realized that Monte Cristo was truly Edmond Dantes, as he died, said, “`Forgive me for having denied you! I see now that you exist, that you are the father of men in heaven and the judge of men on earth. I refused to acknowledge you for so long, O my God! Forgive me, Lord, forgive me!’” (Dumas 344) He realized as he neared death that his wrongdoing against Edmond Dantes came back to kill him in the
