Biases and assumptions. A career counselor should understand how biases and assumptions can affect the counseling process. The counselor may have a more difficult time connecting with the client. For example, the counselor should make sure that one does not display microaggressions that could offend her. The career counselor may also have a problem understanding the client’s worldview. This may send make Taneka believe that she is not understood. It would be less likely that she would return to counseling. A counselor can mitigate these biases and assumptions by learning about individuals that are different from him or her. A client should understand that career identification does not happen immediately. It happens over a period of time. When using the Career Diamond the counselor will help the client to gain awareness about the need for career development (Anderson, n.d). Next, the counselor will identify the possible avenues that a client can explore (Anderson, n.d). This may cause a client like Taneka to be bewildered because of the many different choices (Anderson, n.d). A client like Taneka may identify the characteristics that will help to choose occupations that may be a good fit for the client (Anderson, n.d). In the next phase of the counseling process, the counselor will help the client identify the values of the client (Anderson, n.d). This will help the client to narrow the client’s focus (Anderson, n.d). The client will then set priorities which can help the client come to a decision and develop a career plan. Taneka may choose between college or a job oportunity, but this will not mean that she has completed the career decision process. Taneka will always become more aware of her skills. For that reason, one should use assessment tools that will help Taneka through the career decision-making process. The card sort activity would be a useful activity that a counselor can use with Taneka. During the counseling process, Taneka may become overwhelmed by the many different career paths. Each card has a word on it. The client would have to choose the cards to describe what she desires to have in career. As the Taneka, the client can explain why she chose the cards. The card sort activity will help the Taneka to establish her priority. The cards that Taneka has chosen will help to identify the career paths that may be more appropriate.
