Cosquer Cave Handprints

Improved Essays
But, what about the other artwork? What about the handprints—aren’t they a big deal at Cosquer Cave?
In a word, yes—they’re a big deal. And here’s why: there are 65 handprints inside Conquer Cave, most out of all of the caves in Europe. They are all located in the east side of the chamber, with one in the south. Only adult hand stencils have been found. Many of them have incomplete fingers. That is because the artists were bending their fingers when they drew.
That last fact is actually pretty interesting. Hand stencils with incomplete fingers had only been found in very few caves until recently. Now, we know that the technique of bending fingers was far more widely represented than had been thought.
So, how did we find all those handprints?

Bryan Vongkhamdy Articulation of Human Hands in Comparison to Bear Paws Chimpanzees, apes, and gorilla share a very similar anatomy but another mammal also shares a similar anatomy to humans as well. The bear in particular also shares a similar anatomy, specifically the paws of a bear when compared to a human’s hands. Even with similar anatomy, the bear is mostly a quadruped mammal, but is capable of bipedalism, while humans are bipedal mammals. In humans, the hand is meant for a variety of different flexing hand movements allowing for very specific holding and gripping. Meanwhile, in a bear forearm and paw they bring much more strength to carry the massiveness of the body of the bear while walking and running.…

Thesis: Early Northern Renaissance and later Northern Renaissance differences are subtle, but can be observed through the layers of symbolism and emphasis on particular ascetics of a piece. Throughout the all of Europe, depictions of the Virgin and Child was a common motif among artists. “The ancient astronaut theory all started in 1968, when Swiss researcher and author Erich Von Daniken published a book known as Chariots of the Gods, which became an immediate bestseller.” Within the book he put his hypothesis that, “‘the technology and religions of many ancient civilizations were given to them by ancient astronauts who were welcomed as gods” (Ancient Astronaut Theory). In the book he gives evidence and reasons as to why he believes in this theory, but one thing is wrong with all this. All the “evidence” stating that ancient astronauts visited earth, inspired human culture, and influenced human advancement; things such as cave paintings, stone artifacts, and ancient structures; it’s all just art and architecture, we have no…
