Three rioters were looking for a man named death. They began their journey for a town about a mile away from where they were. On the way to the other town, they meet an old man on the road. Just like the pardoner with some churches that are corrupt, are only for business. Not for the religion solely, but for the money and the fame that can from the people. The Pardoner forgot to “mention in [his] tale.... [that] If there be one among [them] that is willing/ To have my absolution for a shilling” (263-268). Like a church that is corrupt, he is soon to come to his death or downfall because of his greed. He is offering everyone on the pilgrimage a pardon if “they shall be first to pay” (287). Always wanting money as opposed to what his job truly is as a pardoner. The church still to this day will put money above its people and the mission of the church and is this does happen the the church will come to its downfall and cease to exist.
The pardoner’s connection with the church, the three men that betray one another, and the man that gives the rioters gold show that greed leads to death according to Chaucer. Greed of anything can ruin an individual's life. “Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal.
