Free enterprise often results in the establishment of a more stable economy, offering, as a result, more financial opportunities. Hope rapidly grew among Indians as the economic liberalization of 1991 took place, promising them many opportunities for social mobility. However, because of the corrupt institutional system of India, the momentum for social growth was rapidly halted. Author Katherine Boo, in her book Behind the Beautiful Forevers, reports the consequences of India’s corruption in its poorest habitants, specifically in Annawadi. Boo maintains that Annawadians knew only “three main ways out of poverty: finding an entrepreneurial niche… politics and corruption,” (62). Annawadians and many others less privileged in India are forced to choose corruption as an escape route due to their famishment, lack of education, and the rooted political injustice they face. These adverse circumstances have left Annawadians and one-third of today’s poverty stranded in India.

However, the reality that many people experience, including Annawadians, is a different one. The miserable circumstances that are lived by Annawadians force them to choose disapproving routes. Without alternatives, Annawadians are confronted with the decision of choosing corruption for their survival or morality for their starvation. Although poverty may seem insignificant to only a small group of people, it should be of concern to anyone who cares about injustice and inequality.
