During the journey to the south, Papa and the boy find an abandoned supermarket and inside some soda. “He looked at his father and then tilted the can and drank… You have some Papa. I want you to drink it.” (23). Even Though the boy is trying soda for the first time he wants his father to experience soda with him. The world is a harsh place and the boy has never heard of sharing, yet cares for his Papa and finds it a natural instinct to offer. Even more we see the boy act with a warm heart to a stranger. “ Take it, the boy said. He reached with his scrawny claws and took it and held it to his chest. Eat it, the boy said. It’s good”(164). The boy does not even know who this man is yet he is willing to help and share the little food supply he has; therefore showing that it is his natural instinct to treat people with kindness. Also we see the boy care deeply for the health and safety of his father during a tense time. “I’ll save your half. Okay. You save it until tomorrow… I want to be with you”(279). The boy is in need of his father, and sees him as the one who is kindest person on earth. Although Papa is dying he does not succumb to sinful actions and instead uses compassion to treat dying Papa. Though compassion is sparse on the road, Papa and the boy know that they must maintain their nobility and survive.
