Race relations have been around for decades, and things haven’t changed so much since the incident in Little Rock on September 4th, 1957. Most African Americans still find it hard to be included into the White American society because there are still people in the world that choose not to accept them, due to the color of their skin. They are still being mistreated and judged and people always assume the worst from them in every given situation. In the article, “The Myth of Race” by Agustin Fuentes, he explains the question about human variation and how we can tell everyone apart from each other and how it’s all just a myth. I believe that people who discriminate against anyone of color need to understand that we are all the same on the inside and we are the ones who make the categories between each other.…
What is the obsession with people’s need of identification. Don't they understand that in the outside we might be different, but in the inside we all are the same? In her article, “Being an Other,” Melissa Algranati gives a personal narrative of her life and her parent's life and how they faced discrimination and her struggles about being identified as an “other” even though she was an American born jewish and Puerto Rican. Michael Omi’s article “In Living Color: Race and American Culture” reinforces Algranati’s article since in his article he discusses about people ideas about race the stereotypes that they face. Michael Omi reinforces Melissa Algranati because they both argue about America’s obsessions of labelling people and how it affect…
Under the Influence: Discrimination Since the start of the 21st century, racial diversity has increased and the nation’s minority population has grown substantially. Minorities today are the majority in many parts of the country. Studies predict that if current rates of the national population continue to trend the way it has for the past 20 year, then by 2035, minorities will outnumber non-Hispanic caucasians. There are many benefits and advantages of diversity, however, there are also challenges and barriers. It is important to note that the very communities that are growing are also the ones that are experiencing significant obstacles, disparities and discrimination.…
Colorblind For years, African Americans have gathered to create a colorless society. Historical groups have tried to gain racial equality through riots, marches and often sacrificing their own lives. New generations have forgotten the true meaning of what it is to be colorblind. Alex Kotlowitz an award winning author on urban affairs appeared on New York Times for his article “Colorblind,” in which he addresses an issue that society is said to be colorblind, even though people still chose to believe their own myths which leads to division of race.…
Racism is something that has been studied for many years, however we don’t truly know why it happens or where it comes from. There are many theories of racism that give different ideas of where it has come from. In her book, Towards the Elimination of Racism (Katz. 2013.), Phyllis Katz describes how there are several major categories of racism. Katz splits the major categories into two separate parts, the first being “victim-system control” and the second being “degree of embeddedness”. As we focus on her theory of “victim-system” control, Katz describes it as, “the extent to which a theory locates the root or cause of racial injustice: as within the environmental control of its primary victims or within the larger social structure.”…
Paulina Clemente Dr. O’Toole SOA-110-P1 11/14/17 Racial Healing: Confronting the Fear Between Blacks & Whites by Harlon Dalton is a book written to help the reader look sociologically at the realities of society when dealing with race. It highlights the superiority that white folk have in society compared to blacks, or other people of color, and how it’s important to acknowledge this in order to talk about and heal the racial wounds of America. Dalton gives suggestions for both whites and blacks alike to improve the social situations in society while also being able to adjust how blacks continue on with their lives by keeping in mind that it’s all right to maintain their culture, and that they should come together as a community to work through…
In today’s society which we call the United States of America there may be many predictions, speculations, and myths that have been thought of when it comes to our history. I have analyzed and did my own research on the history of racism. Racism is the belief of people of each race, who acts as if one is superior to another race. There are several prejudice practices practiced by racial individuals which discriminates against people of other race and due to their skin color. I watched four movies such as Birth of a Nation, Beloved, 13th, and Do the Right Thing which tells us where racism comes from, and how it is has changed over the years.…
Categorizing and identifying threat is part human defense mechanism which allowed humans to survive nature and evolve into the modern man. Identifying threat in nature allowed for better survival and by categorizing animals into dangerous or safe further improves the chances of survival. Unfortunately, this defense mechanism of categorizing and identifying threat in the modern world has shifted from animals to other humans. Describing someone based on their appearance is normal and it facilitates the recognition of that individual, but racism also developed due to natural tendency of humans categorizing subjects. In America, the land in which everyone is created equal, there is a clear evidence that equality between races may just be an ideology…
In American society today, the colorblind ideology has changed the way we view and discuss race. In fact, Americans believe that the problems faced during the Civil Rights Movement such as segregation and racism have been resolved; ultimately, believing that it only takes the achievement of the individual to fully reach the American Dream. Colorblindness is viewed as the most logical path to stopping discrimination, through the equal treatment of individuals regardless of race, ethnicity, and culture. Furthermore, the colorblind ideology suggests that racial harmony can be achieved by overlooking or ignoring ones ethnic and racial appearances. The idea that “racism does not exist or matter” is believed to be beneficial to people of color.…
Assignment 4 Philip James SOC 100 The first document that I chose is titled “Sociology of Racism” written by Matthew Clair of Havard University and Jeffrey Denis of McMaster University. I wanted to use this paper because it discusses the origin of racism and how people come to possess it. According to Clair and Denis, racism roots from the thought that a certain group is superior to the other because small differences such as hair color, skin tone, and facial structure. Racism is very different from racial discrimination and inequality but really it is the root of difference from one group to another.…

In her article, “Defining Racism”, Beverly Tatum discusses racism and how it continues to rear its ugly head, even today. By providing a unique definition for the controversial term, she is able to highlight what it really means to be human, as well as the limitations that surround the word “racism”. Tatum’s writing draws upon ideas that can be seen in several works including the article, “Representations of Whiteness in the Black Imagination” and novels such as Between the World and Me, March Book One, March Book Two, and Kite Runner. Through each one of these novels, the reader is shown what humanity through a racist lens looks like. To begin, Tatum defines racism as “ a system of advantage based on race” (126).…
