Controversy in Epileptic Medication Around five percent of epileptics are sensitive to lights that flicker. For example, strobe lights or a change in light can be a trigger for seizures. Although the medications given for epilepsy are to help minimize the seizures, there are other treatment options. Those other treatments may include a ketogenic diet, surgery in the brain, and even medical marijuana. Epileptic seizures can happen anytime, any place, and because of anything that triggers the brain sensors. Some doctors may say epilepsy is a disorder and some may say it is a disease. The patient has to follow up with their primary doctor or neurologist and they have to be seizure free a year to receive their driver’s license in the state of Illinois. When renewing their license, they have to have their doctor or neurologist sign off on it. It is just like getting medications from the doctors, they have to sign papers. (McGlasson) There are different types of epileptic medication. Some of the medication includes levetiracetam, lamotrigine, topiramate, clonazepam, nitrazepam, and gabapentin. Sometimes taking the epilepsy medication is not the best choice, but some people would rather take the medication and get it over with, people have a hassle trying to get to their seizure or epilepsy appointments because of their busy schedules therapy to try to reduce the seizures. Taking any of the medications long term can make you suffer side effects that could affect you later in life. Some of the other treatments help without even touching the medication. “The medication can help more than the other treatments because of the chemicals in the AEDs” (“Anti-Epileptic Drugs”). The chemicals in the AED’s can replace certain chemicals that your brain is missing and needs for the seizures to not happen. “Up to 70% (7 in 10) people with epilepsy could have their seizures completely controlled with AED’s” (“How Anti-Epileptic Drugs Work”). The ones that don’t actually have to switch over to the medications to control their seizures. Some of the benefits from the other treatments can be you are not taking medicine that has harmful chemicals in them. Along with the medical marijuana it has even more chemicals that can hurt you more than what is in the medications that can be prescribed. They are better rather than the medications because the other treatments are natural to your body. The medications can be foreign and your body can reject them. The surgery way can help you but it can also help you. Surgery can minimize the
