Controversial Relationship Between Gender And Crime

The relationship between gender and crime is very controversial and has been studied for many of years. In my life experiences, gender and crime have never been thought of. This is because no one close to me has been criminally charged. But, to my knowledge through media outlets, tv shows, and social media in general, there are many instances when gender is associated with crime. In the opinions that I have seen strewn across media headlines, men are often found as the criminals and women are not. Men tend to be criminally charged more than women and the offenses committed by men are a lot harsher, like murder, compared to the woman. When comparing how women and men are criminally accused, in my opinion, it can be seen that woman are less likely,

As Katz cites in the documentary, 99% of rapes, 86% cases of domestic violence, and 87% of stalking cases are perpetuated by men. Of course, while I am somewhat dubious of the numbers because of how few men report issues such as domestic violence or how few women report their sexual assaults to authorities, I cannot trust that those statistics are perfect. Yet, I have no doubt that the majority of these crimes are enacted by men against…

For my extra credit assignment, I decided to watch the film, Tough Guise 2. The film was mainly about violence in America and how males are the ones committing violent acts. Females also commit violent acts, but are just a small fraction compared to men. According to the film, statistics show that eighty-six percent of armed robberies are committed by men. Seventy-seven percent of aggravated assaults are committed by men and eighty-six percent of domestic violence incidents that have ended with physical injuries were perpetrated by men.…

What is Gender Gap in Offender Sentencing? Disparity in gender offender sentencing revolves around female defendants irrespective of backgrounds reciving less sever sentences as compared to male defendants in the same category of offence as well as having similar backgrounds. The disparities also touch in the disagreements on whether women are actually favoured as compared to men in offender sentencing. Therefore, gender gaps in offender sentencing can be explained by the pervasiveness found in gender stereotyping associated with offender sentencing.…

Derived from the social reaction theory, the labeling theory deals with how offenders react to how society classifies them in which seems to influence further offending as well as more extremely. According to Tibbetts (2012), the theory assumes two perspectives about the people labeled; negative labeling of those living in lower class or minorities and they have no choice but to conform to the theory referred to as hands-off policy. The hands-off policy was convincing in the 1960s and early 1970s to policy makers, while on the other hand critics believed it to be bias in sentencing. This led to the influential work by George Mead and Charles Cooley, who work focused on the mind, self, and society of how people react and are influenced by…

In the news, especially in America, it’s clear that the discussion about race and crime is still going on. Many cases such as the deaths of black men Michael Brown in Ferguson and Sam DuBose in Cincinnati in the past few years have brought up some of the same questions being asked in The Condemnation of Blackness. A century after the censuses and original reports, social researchers and the rest of the world is wondering, what is the tie between race(specifically the black population) and crime? The way these cases and information were handled can provide help and affect, both positively and negatively, the way current day discussions happen and are put in the media.…

It’s a fact that most crime is done by males, but why exactly? There’s no fact that simply because a person is male they will commit a crime. This happens because of the influence of society and how they were raised, rather than their gender. Simply because the allowance of abortion and crime decreasing sounds merely like a coincidence. It doesn’t change the real factor at hand, as to why certain kids grow up to commit crimes.…

The complicated relationship between race and crime has been a enormous debate in the United states. Since the 1980s there has been a vast increase in racial crime due to a massive increase in population. For example in the textbook Juvenile Delinquency the core 6th edition it states that “ There are approximately 40 million European American and 10 million African American youths ages 5 to 17, a ratio of about four to one” ( Larry J. Siegel & Brandon C. Welsh 46). This shows the large increase in criminal activity because of more people in the world. As time keeps on passing people are sometimes suspected of being bad because of their race and because of that some races get treated differently.…

The traditional idea of women having to take care of the kids and house was also a role that was pressed onto women which was an incorrect generalization. Men also hold better job positions such as CEOs, the men to women ration on positions like this are usually always male dominated. Women are also sexually abused and assaulted more frequently. As you stated, some believed the increase in female crime had to do with females escaping abusive households and having to resort to street crime. However, it does not seem likely that so many women would be feeling abusive households especially during the time period to account for such an increase. It also fails to explain white collar crimes by women. I also found Messerschmidt theory to be interesting and honestly a bit absurd. I am not sure what would be considered masculine needs or acts and the need to commit crime in order to prove masculinity seems…

Gender Policing sometimes defines our society and this needs to change. “Gender policing is a normative approach to gender that involves coercion and socialization of individuals into conforming to the gender binary” …(MediaWiki, 2014.) Gender Policing also goes hand in hand with gender norms. Normative approaches to gender such as clothing categories for either females or males, what sports each the average male or female should play, if a baby is female or male at birth. The fact that at birth we are forced to give babies a gender when just coming out of the mother’s womb just shows how strong the influence of gender policing is in our society.…
