Ellie’s romance and outlet throughout the film is Palmer Joss, a faith based author who challenges Ellie’s views. With such a large focus on the science aspect of aliens, Palmer engages Ellie in a different way of thinking. Which is similar to today’s millennial generation. The majority of Millennials’ turn to their phone and the internet when an answer is needed. However, they still pertain to a sense of religion and faith just using a different medium. A large amount of Millennials’ read scriptures through apps and online websites and also using it to connect to other Millennials’ Christians and to find churches and seminars. In most cases, it has been portrayed as something to steer clear of. However, in the novel they are looked at as a race that might have the solution and the cure to this deathly plague. Our technology has advanced substantially over the last decade in the field of genetics, the idea of humans that are superior to others is not far off in our future. Parents will soon be able to pick traits of their unborn child to provide them with skills and knowledge that will benefit them as they grow. This idea can relate back to Contact and their superior skills for written and mathematical data. In the film, the aliens had the technology to get in contact with our race, and send us instructions for a space craft in a form of language humans have never seen before. If genetically modified humans were a real aspect in the time of the film, the person chosen to leave this galaxy to learn of another may have been of a different genetic make-up due to their superior knowledge.
