Lets take for example Black Friday, black Friday shows exactly the “consumerist America” so much that it is even almost a holiday. Stores open their doors early in the morning even before dawn and the lines of costumers waiting for the store to open is outrageous. This shows how the mindset of people is to consume stuff they don’t need to appear something they are not. The massive amount of advertisement daily has become so normal in our regular life that many of us cant notice how disturbing it is. Along with the modern obsession with celebrities to imitate their lifestyle, clothes, and attitudes creating a psychological effect on young people. It is intrusive and manipulative to any persons view and beliefs. Buying, selling, and promoting is not bad, it is they way it is done and the excessive amount of it. People with a strong materialistic value appear to have goal and life expectations that could lead to a poorer well-being, adds Knox College psychologist Tim Kasser, PhD, from Berkeley, California. This means they will need to expand and create more production facilities or factories. So accordinf to “The Economist” in Spend,Spend,Spend, many companies steal, bribe or buy land from the government such as rain forests or completely fertile soils to cut-them down and mass produce their goods. They also import or pay local workers minimum wages to work in the factories they created in their lands. This means that perfectly fertile soil that could be use for creating crops and food are being destroyed contributing to world hunger and environmental damage. If we live on a planet with 6-7 billion people and growing at a fast rate, it is not sustainable at all if everyone in the world started to consume goods. Since 1961 to 2003 we have used over the half of the planets resources so we are beyond our planet limits. It is important to be aware of this and have enough intellectual independence to see it
