Another example to understand the situation better could be “Ikeaization”. In his article “On the Ikeaization of France”, Tod Hartman has fairly pointed out the relationship between the consumerism and mass production. How has the industry and the users got affected with the introduction of a new concept of mass production? The characteristics of the Ikea store being extremely tidy, well arranged, with mock up spaces and showcases of interior design magazines makes the customer feel convinced at the first glance. This feeling gets enhanced with the numerous available options. So, it sells the same quality furniture across the world. The new products from Ikea boast of simplistic and minimalist designs. These designs when bought home creates and aesthetic clash with the already existing old products questioning the co-existence of both the types in the same space. Slowly, the old products are replaced by the new functional and simplistic products. So, from design and aesthetic perspective, selling more products from Ikea will mean generating more demands. The third concern with Ikea is its presentation and availability of varied multiple permutations and combinations. The whole idea of the luxury of choosing the best fit design and having multiple items to choose from has not remained limited to the rich. It is one of the biggest and one the most crucial institutions of the consumer society. About a century back the overall idea of the consumer behavior pivoted around the income a family generated, essentially living with your income. The most one could afford taking a payment terms were for buying their homes. But, the scenario changed in coming years, when a lot of financial institutions and large stores started offering credits and loans for fulfilling the dreams a bit earlier without financial stress. Slowly the parameters for opting the credit was not limited to expensive necessities but to also furniture, appliances and other requirements of a home and self. Within last two decades the extent of these institutions has gone far end to meet luxuries as well. Moreover, with growing demands and globalization, there is also a change in the culture and living standards. A family of dependable people has changed to a group of people attached by an emotional or social structure. In simpler words the concept of family and sharing things within family has changed to individual preferences. As discussed above, individuality now a day is simpler to define with the way your house is or the interiors finishes and products you have used.
