Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) explains an assortment of systematic information-gathering activities concerning aspects influencing the occurrence of behavior (antecedents, consequences, settings, or motivating operations) (Board Certified Behavior Analysis (2014). Collecting relevant information concerning the occurrences of the Sebastian’s behavior needs to include the antecedents and consequences that are maintaining his behavior is vital part of the functional assessment (Miller, 2011). FBA is used to gather information to determine the function of the problem behavior. After determining the function of the behavior an appropriate intervention can be implemented to decrease or increase for an appropriate behavior (Copper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). Assessments can be collected and analyzed by using check lists, direct observation, experimental analysis and interviews. Furthermore, behavior analyst uses direct observation to record the problem behavior because it is the most reliable method. To assure reliability of recording direct observations, trained observers are used so they may observe the behavior as it occurs (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). Using a tally mark is a simple way to record direct observations. The observer can put a strip of masking tape on their pant leg and draw a tally mark every time the behavior occurs. The Behavior Assessment System for Children-2 (BASC-2), a revision of the original BASC, is a multi-method and multidimensional assessment. In the revision of this assessment there were multiple changes “designed to evaluate various aspects of behavior and personality, including positive adaptive as well as negative clinical dimensions” (Myers et al, 2010). In 2004, AGS Publishing and Pearson Assessments published this psychological test. In hopes of creating an assessment that was useful in observing behavior and self-perception, Cecil R. Reynolds and Randy W. Kamphaus created the BASC-2 in English and Spanish. Furthermore, this assessment is only available to individuals who are trained or certified by a recognized institution, with a minimum…

Particularly, the purpose of the program evaluation was to determine whether the expected changes in children’s behavioral outcomes might be attributed to the Applied Behavior Analysis program and activities. The presented findings suggested that ABA may be an effective intervention to assist children diagnosed with autism in learning new skills and behaviors.…

Inappropriate behaviors, which are present in all classrooms, are essentially a form of communication. Educators looking for ways to handle these behaviors can use functional behavior assessments to assist them in identifying, describing, and predicting the purpose of student behavior. Determining the cause of the behavior helps educators understand how to respond, what treatments to use, and which replacement behaviors are appropriate. When the function of the behavior is understood, educators can construct the appropriate behavior intervention strategies to reduce challenging behaviors which will result in a more positive learning environment and improved learning for all students in the…

ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY Population and Setting Characteristics Although a substantial proportion of functional analysis studies (37.2%) included adults, the majority of studies included children (70.0%) with some form of developmental disability (91.3%; see Table 2). Given the high prevalence of problem behavior in persons with developmental disabilities, the fact that the majority of functional analysis studies have focused on this population is not surprising. A much lower percentage of studies included functional analyses of problem behaviors exhibited by persons without disabilities (9.0%), showing that this is a relatively underresearched area.…

Behavioural problems are manifestations of deeper mental and emotional problems. Hall & Elliman (2003) define psychological, emotional and behavioural problems as ‘behaviours or distressed emotions, which are common or normal in children at some stage of development, but become abnormal by virtue of their frequency or severity, or their inappropriateness for a particular child’s age compared to the majority of ordinary children’. The spectrum of behaviours can vary from very mild to clinically problematic, and their definition and nature often expands beyond the term ‘behavioural problems’ itself to incorporate mental and emotional health problems.…
