Compromises In American History

Improved Essays
A few compromises were established in about 1787 in America. Two of the compromises were the Great Compromise and also the Three-Fifths Compromise. The Great Compromise was the plan of government adopted at the Constitutional Convention that created a two-house Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives bases representation from each state by the population of the state while in the Senate each state is represented by two senators elected by their state legislatures. People who wanted a strong government and states to have a strong voice got what they wanted from the Great Compromise with the Senate to represent the states and a different House of Representatives to represent the population of the people. Without Roger Sherman to give us the great idea of this compromise we might have not had America still standing in peace today. But, even though the Great Compromise was huge in American history, there was another big compromise in our history.
The other huge compromise in America’s history was the Three-Fifths Compromise. This basically said that slaves would count as three-fifths of a person when counting population for representation in The

As all Americans know, not many people own slaves but more like employees to work for money that earn a minimum wage. We still use the Great Compromise today because it keeps America from being in a political argument on how we should vote. It also is still up because it is a great system for our political voting systems and works for us even if we get confused from time to time. If we still had slaves, the Three-Fifths Compromise would work very well and would keep states from having too much power over other ones. Even though America went through some difficult times, we were still able to have the right people there to help solve some major

I thought that the 3/5ths compromise was a fair solution to the dilemma that surrounded how we should count slaves. This is because although slaves are people, they are also property. They work for their masters, and they could be sold from person to person. But because they can think and aren’t irrational animals, they should be also considered as people. Although it wasn’t completely fair to the slaves and states, it was fair and necessary to make sure the Southern states had supported the Constitution.…

In 1787, politicians at the Constitutional Convention created two compromises to address the population gap between the North and South (PN 187). Since representation in the House of Representatives depended on population, the Northern states received significantly more delegates due to the dramatically larger populations. In an effort to balance the representation in the House, the convention created the Three-Fifths Compromise, which counted each slave as three-fifths of a person. In exchange, the South agreed to abolish the slave trade on January 1, 1808, which signaled the progressive, gradual decline of slavery in the South. The Compromise of 1787 successfully relieved sectional conflict until 1820, when tensions arose over the land acquired from the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.…

The years following 1850 proved to be a time of political turmoil in the United States. With slavery still being utilized in the South, it seemed that the Northern and Southern politicians would always be at odds. This opposition would always exist between the North and South so long as slavery existed. During the period preceding the Compromise of 1850 politicians were able to formulate compromises that barely appeased both sides. Eventually there was nothing else to do to satisfy both sides of the country.…

When the Constitutional Convention became deadlocked over the matter of legislative voting, Sherman proposed a system analogous to one he had advocated before as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1776 (Keith, 2006). The compromise provided for representation in the House of Representatives as per population and in the Senate by equal numbers for each state. Finally, the Sherman compromise was adopted on July 16, 1787 by five states to four. This not only served to save the convention that was set to fall apart, but ultimately provided the effort to resolve the other issues yet to be decided (Keith,…

Large states wanted a population-based representation, but the small states wanted equal representation. Roger Sherman proposed a solution that there would be two houses of Congress. In Sherman’s solution, there would be a Senate with representation equal between all states and a House of Representatives with representation based on population. This was called the Great Compromise and the Connecticut Compromise. The next issue was between the northern and southern states regarding slaves.…

There is much speculation about what the United States would be like today without this Compromise. Which leads to the question, should the Compromise have ever been approved? Still, regardless if the Compromise was approved or not, the Civil War was an inevitable event in American history. The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to solve tensions between the North and the South over the expansion of slavery, specifically into Texas, which was a territory obtained by the United States in the Mexican…
