Compound Interest In High School

Decent Essays
A lot has been said about how math has its practical uses. But what really stands out to me was when me and my wife were talking about our long term financial goals with our financial advisor. At that time, our advisor is throwing out acronyms and jargons at us that we have no idea what they are about. Terms like Traditional IRA, ROTH IRA, VUL, 401k, College Plan 529 baffled us. But once he slowly defined those technical mumbo jumbo and said the words “compound interest”, that is when I feel grateful towards my high school math teacher. I can still remember the difference between simple and compound interest and after doing some simple calculations with the formula, I convinced my wife to shell out more money as contribution to our 401K, IRA

I always found refuge in math’s exactness, so I poured myself into the structure and the problems. But in the cycle of rearranging and factoring and calculating, I yearned for a unified understanding of the concepts we were learning. My solution: forging an appreciation of why everything in mathematics worked. There may be arbitrary starting points and definitions, but once I understood that everything we were learning extended concepts that extended concepts that extended this very groundwork of mathematics, it illuminated the poetic brilliance mathematics is: everything flowed together, and I carried out each procedure with purpose and…

Being financially fluent in money is not as easy as it looks and teaching teenagers this skill is even harder. Currently, school boards are revising the high school curriculum to teach kids financial literacy. I do not think that every high school should carry out this course as a mandatory choice, but I rather it is a secondary choice. Firstly, creating financial literacy as an obligatory course will probably lead to a decrease in performance. According to source 2, high school students that took the financial literacy course obtained worse scores than those who did not.…

Butler’s Teaching Concepts of Math was incredibly helpful going into internship. Since I was in first grade, I had the math skills I needed to teach math, but Dr. Butler’s class helped me learn the strategies I would need to use. One strategy we learned in Dr. Butler’s class was using base-ten pieces. We learned about flats, longs, and units. In first grade, they only used longs and units, but called them 10s and 1s.…

In Bertrand Russell's words: “Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty—a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of painting or music, yet sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show.” Math is a language of logic. It is a disciplined, organized way of thinking. There is a right answer; there are rules that must be followed.…

People say that we don’t use math in everyday life but this Financial Literacy project proved my wrong to the point that I began to hate the calculator because I never thought that math would be used that much. The things I want to remember is the use of a credit card, meal plans and management, lastly car payments. This project made me rethink the use of my money because you must learn to manage it well or you will suffer but the positive moment is that we can figure out what do next. The best part of this project is that I was able to learn the too manage money and to use more math, which is the best part. Yet credit cards seem like a friend but actually they are a nightmare, which you can’t trust.…

Growing up in a country where an individual has limited awareness of the importance of oral health has pushed me towards Dentistry. The first time I went to the Dentist was for a tooth extraction and, apart from my blood-covered gums, I was impressed by the way, the dentist completed the extraction while also making me feel at ease. In order to gain an understanding of the day-to-day routine of a dentist, I shadowed an NHS practitioner and a private group dental clinic. I observed the different situations that patients were in and how the dentist dealt with them.…

Mathematics is a universal truth that not even nature can defy; it is logic and it is beauty. Mathematics is found at the core of my life and in the lives of every living thing: shells show off the fibonacci sequence, humans live neverending patterns, every great architectural masterpiece from the Parthenon to Frank Lloyd Wright's houses are built and designed with great mathematical precision. To break from pattern is the only unknown that exists, but it will always show growth and leave room for new experiences. SUMMET has the ability to push me to grow and expand. I should be chosen to attend SUMMET because I am a student that wants to learn, that strives to go beyond high school, and one who will benefit from the furthering of my education.…

I’ve loved math even before reading this chapter. The contents clearly explain the reason why I love math so much -- because I’m really good at it, I love math more than others do. I’ve never thought about why I have good math abilities. Only after the author talked about the relation between math abilities and the language one used to learn math, I found the reason. Using Chinese to learn math is so much straightforward because it takes less time for me to read out numbers and memorize it.…
