Embryonic and fetal stem cells are both heavily contested topics as the thought of destroying human life at any stage has always been a topic of debate by a large faction of the nation. It is usually religious beliefs people are affiliated with, that drive them to advocate for the end of stem cell research. The Supreme Court was of no help or harm in this matter as the philosophical ruling that all life is sacred or that life starts at conception is admittedly a difficult decision. It is this existential divide that causes stem cell research to be a political anchor in what the voter chooses, and it only serves to drive people further apart in the pro-choice and pro-life movement. The majority of industrialized …show more content…
“For the scientist, the goals are advancement of knowledge and treatment of disease” (Bobrow). For scientist their main goal is to advance their knowledge of a particular subject, in this case stem cell research. Scientists are always searching for knowledge of things that are yet to be known, but sometimes that quest for knowledge can lead to a not so noble end. Stem cell research is something that has the potential to be useful or detrimental. Scientists cannot predict all the possible outcomes of this experimentation. There are currently no guidelines or boundaries for the research on stem cells. Scientists at this point have not been given strict guidelines or protocols that they have to follow. They have lost sight of the facts that they are experimenting on embryos that have all of the functions to be considered alive. Scientists are more concerned with advancing the general population, than the rights of the embryo. Another concern with stem cell research is that scientists do not know the long term implications of this experimentation. “At present, scientists still know very little about how stem cell differentiation is controlled” (Murnaghan). One thing that could prove to be out of the scientists control is how stem cells differentiate. There is no way to know the long term effects of stem cell research, because this research is in its
