Religion in Iran and Afghanistan
Many people just refer to the religions in Iran and Afghanistan as Muslim. A Muslim is an Islamic follower. This religion is made up of two types, Sunni Islam and Shi’a Islam. The majority of Muslims live in the middle east, including Iran and Afghanistan. Sunni Islam followers are known as Sunnis or Sunnites. There are Mullah’s among both Sunni and Shi’a, a Muslim who has learned the Islamic theology and sacred law. A majority of Mullah’s are Sunni. According to the Mullah “prayers are the key to every earthly problem… destiny shapes human life” (Omar 178). Prayer can help you through any problem you may come across. Muhammad was the first prophet of the Islamic religion, but Zarathustra was the first prophet in Iran. So many Shi’a Islam’s view Zarathustra as the first prophet not Muhammed. “You must base everything on these three rules: Behave well, speak well, act well” (Satrapi 7). These rules are very important to many Shi’a Islam. Addition to the many Muslim holidays, the Shi’a Islam celebrate a few extra holidays, such as the fire ceremony. The fire ceremony is celebrated right before the Iran New Year on the first day of spring, March 21st. The light of the fire symbolizes good. It is believed that on the last day of the year the spirits of ancestors come to visit. The fire ceremony is to bring good luck and seeing their way through the unlucky night of these
