Comparing Two Abbreviations

Decent Essays
I found the two websites very interesting. Both of them have their own dictionary in which you can find multiples definitions for a single term. As a gamer I often use terms such as PK, noob, gf, lol, rofl, PVP, K.O and pile. Abbreviation is one of the things that I like to do, since I found it humorous and funny. It makes texting more enjoyable. I won’t use text abbreviations in any other situation besides gaming or texting because sometimes people can misinterpret the meaning of the word. For example, if tell somebody “hey gf”, perhaps the other person will think I called him hey girlfriend, when I meant hey good

In the article JCAHO “Forbidden” Abbreviations, I learned how easily someone can get confused with an abbreviation and think it is something else. That is very dangerous. If someone uses D/C for discharge, another might interpret it as “discontinue”, and that could be very threatening because they could discontinue a patients medicines that they might need. All of these abbreviations are very easily mistakable, and I can see how. But, if people just follow the “Do not use” list, these problems and be…

Texting isn 't exactly the language of the century, it’s not seen in equal respects to even the least intricate communication techniques. Since its creation, texting has grown in popularity and in ease of access. Slang words, a revamped view on the use of abbreviations and the pound sign have become more than a shortcut, John McWhorter introduces the idea of texting as an advancement in language. Just the same as the transformation of any language, such as Latin texting has entered that stage that is just one in the same, according to the argument by John McWhorter.…

Slang words are an interesting thing. They are words that have been formed by different cultures that require someone to have an understanding of that culture to understand the meaning of that slang word. For example, if someone walks up to you and says that you look terrible kappa, you would be confused and not know what they mean. Words like this requires knowledge of gaming culture, lots of terms used by the people in the community were made by people who are pro players that gave new meanings to words. The abbreviation for laugh out loud is annoying in my opinion and I could relate to McWhorter when he said it was being used as a “pragmatic particle.” LOL can be overused and can be misinterpreted in different contexts if it’s put in the wrong place and replaced for a filler word. The meaning “laugh out loud” shows the other person that they understand the feelings of what the other person is trying to convey. I would much rather see the laugh emoji put at the end of the sentence or a thought to signal that you are laughing instead of using LOL, which can be…

When texting initially emerged, text language and abbreviations were more common because people were charged per text. Therefore, we see a diminishing of text language now because of a difference in how the texts are charged. Texters can now write in complete sentences without fretting about running out of character space and being charged for the content of one message being divided into multiple messages. Therefore, Crystal’s viewpoint rings accurate. Abbreviations are few in texting and even fewer in formal writing.…

    Slang Trends

One of the most fascinating aspects of human language is the development of slang: expressions that people take from standard English (or whatever native language) and completely change the meaning of to signify something completely different! These words and phrases are essentially inevitable to encounter when living in a dynamic social society; it’s easy to assume that the vast majority of Americans have heard such words as “cool” when referring to something as interesting, or the phrase “hanging out” used to mean spending time with one another. A few words have come up just over the past five to ten years that sparked my curiosity; my main question being, “What do certain slang words mean to people of different age groups?” While most slang…

I think George Orwell made a good point when he said “the English language is in a bad way”. However in this generation it is not politics that is affecting our language; it is social media. Websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have all clearly made an impact on the way we speak and write the English language. Social media has become a quick and easy way to communicate.…
