Comparing The Lottery, The Hunger Games, And The Island

For the purpose of this paper the writer finds it necessary to define the terms that will be encountered throughout this essay. First, there is fascism, a political system headed by a dictator in which the government controls business and labor and opposition is not permitted. Then there’s totalitarian dictatorship, in which a dictator has overall control and there is complete allegiance. Last but not least, there’s hope and the antithesis hope. Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. The antithesis of hope is expecting for something not to happen. Many traditional and totalitarian systems of government utilize hope and the antithesis of hope to help control, regulate and manipulate its citizens. The short story and movie “The Lottery”, The Hunger Games, and The Island are all examples I will use to further illustrate this point.

In the movie and the short story “The Lottery” a traditional system of government was used. The Lottery itself was a traditional drawing that took place on June 27th in a small place called New Hope. Whoever won the lottery was stoned. If there was anyone that questioned the lottery and how it

In the Hunger Games a tribute from district 12, Katniss Everdeen, manipulated the games in such a way that there ended being two victors instead of one. Her achievements not only disrupted the traditional outcome of the games but, it also caused a revolution to start taking place. In the Island the clones ended up escaping into the real world despite the many efforts of their dictator to keep them hidden. Overall, traditional governments, along with the aid of totalitarian dictatorship, can manipulate hope and mold it into the antithesis of hope.
