In the poem “Demeter”, it says “She came from a long, long way, but I saw her at last, walking, my daughter, my girl, across the fields, in bare feet, bringing all spring’s flowers to her mother’s house. I swear the air softened and warmed as she moved,”(Duffy). This stanza from the poem shows that when Persephone was away from her mother, this was the time when Demeter was sad and was destroying everything. This can somewhat represent the seasons. When Demeter was sad and bitter it was fall going into winter because the crops were dying as she was becoming sad and bitter. On the other hand when Persephone is seen walking towards her mother she is bringing beautiful weather with her, this meaning that as Demeter saw Persephone she became happy to see her and full of joy and excitement, which could coralite with the season of spring and summer. This comparison is also seen in the poem “Demeter to Persephone” when persephone comes back to Demeter, she can see that her daughter is bring light back to her life again, but when she sees her daughter she can see that something that has not been the same since she has come back from the underworld. In “Demeter to Persephone” it says “finally you emerged and were immediately soaked you stared at me without love in your large eyes”(Ostriker). This line from the poem can be connected to the hymns when Persephone is coming back to her mother and she finds out that she could have lived the rest of her life back with her mother if she did not eat the seeds that her husband gave her before she left the underworld. When she found out that she was able to go back up she was so excited and she could not wait to go back to her
