Comparing Social Media And Relationships In The Movie Wall-E

Do you ever wonder what the impact of electronics, social media, voice activated automated homes, and even automated grocery stores could have on our future? Is a life of convenience really all that it appears to be? The movie Wall-E shows a possible future that is bleak with the earth desolate and covered in trash, and unable to support life. The human population has moved into outer space living a life of convenience without work or purpose. The people are literally human blobs unable to do anything. They have lost the ability to walk, or move unassisted. They live on shakes and just sit around on social media, gaming, and the internet. They don't have real relationships, they know nothing outside social media. It is a very depressing view of a possible, although I hope unrealistic, future. Does life really mean anything without personal relationships and interactions? Shouldn't everyone work together to make life better for ourselves and others? Are we willing to destroy a planet that is so beautiful and that has the ability to provide life and resources that we need? I believe that we need to make a conscience decision to choose relationships over social media, gaming, and the internet. In the article, “Why Personal Relationships are Important” on the University of Minesota website Taking Charge of Your Health and Wellbeing, the author lists benefits of healthy relationships and consequences of not having healthy relationships. The benefits listed are you live longer, you deal with stress better, you are healthier, and you feel richer. Those all sound great to me. The consequences listed are depression, decreased immune function, and higher blood pressure. The article even says that isolation can be fatal. None of that sounds good to me.
