Comparing Piaget And Kohlberg's Theories

One of the main deviances of Piaget and Kohlberg’s’ theories was that Piaget believed that interaction with peers would have an impact on their moral development, Kohlberg believed that the development was about the persons own thinking and that authority or their peers’ did not have an impact on their moral development (Kohlberg, L., and Hersh, R. 2009). Due to Venables and Thompsons actions it is believed that their moral development was created in the cognitive way; in which they learnt from one another instead of learning from their adults, it is clear that authority figures did not have a clear impact on their moral development, although this theory has helped to understand some actions take it does not take into account the possibility …show more content…

Social learning theories is based on the fact that moral behaviour is learnt in the same way as any other behaviour, unlike the cognitive perspectives Kohlberg followed, social learning theorists don’t agree that moral development is in stages. Referring to Venables and Thompson, there had been reports that they had been exposed to videos containing abusing actions, although these were just speculations from the media, (Hoffman, 1970) if true it would support the finding of the ‘Bobo doll’ study, this showing that observing aggressive behaviour affects the levels of aggression shown in young people. Although this theory had come to this conclusion, Crain (1980) stated that once children become older, they do not rely on models (such as the adults in the videos) and create their own standards of behaviour. This means that even if Venables and Thompsons had been exposed to indecent images at a later age (eight and up), it may not have affected them in such traumatic ways, because was it may have affected them dramatically, leading them to act out on
