Comparing Nietzsche's The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet

Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.” Nietzsche is saying that there is no such thing as the “right way.” Society has a way of making everyone think that there legitimate, appropriate ways to do things, but in reality there are so many distinctive and wondrous ways to do anything, and they are not wrong. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it is expected by society that there is only one way of becoming a woman correctly, but Juliet decided to go about the journey in her own way. Two characters, Romeo and Juliet, from rival families end up falling in love with each other and secretly get married. A couple hours after …show more content…
Romeo and Juliet first met each other at a Capulet ball and fell in love instantaneously. Later, when Romeo found out that she belonged to the Capulet family, his family's sworn enemy, he remarked, “Is she a Capulet? O dear account! My life is my foe's debt.” (Shakespeare 1.5.116-117). When he found out that Juliet is a supposed enemy, he says that his life is now in the hands of his enemy. He has already fallen in love with her, so his fate is basically all up to Juliet now. Romeo and Juliet have a forbidden love, but they believe that they were meant to be together. Even though it goes against everything their families believe in, true love will always prevail. Furthermore, Juliet later finds out that Romeo is an enemy and realizes what has to be done. When she is talking to herself about Romeo on her balcony, she reveals, “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” (Shakespeare 2.2.33-36). Juliet knows that her family will never allow her to be with the family enemy, so she offers to give up her family name to be with the love of her life, Romeo. Juliet is saying that if Romeo does not give up his family name, then she will. Being in love with Romeo changes Juliet’s state of mind and she realizes that she could just leave her family behind to be …show more content…
Since Juliet's parents do not know about Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage, her father planned for her to get married to Paris. Since Juliet does not want to marry Paris, but wants to keep her marriage with Romeo a secret, she tells her parents, “I will not marry yet; and when I do, I swear it shall be Romeo, whom you know I hate, rather than Paris.” (Shakespeare 3.5.121-123). Juliet’s parents have no clue that she is in love with Romeo, so when she says that she would rather marry him than Paris, her parents are astonished by how much she is opposed to getting married. According to Juliet, getting married to the man she absolutely loathes (or so everyone thinks) would be better than being married to Paris. Threatening to be with her foe and defy her parents wishes was the only only way for her to prove her opposition towards marriage. Moreover, Before Juliet’s parents tell her she must marry Paris, Romeo was exiled for killing Juliet’s cousin. Juliet was so torn by that and the fact she was about to be forced to get married to Paris that she went to seek advice from her holy man, Friar Laurence and told him, “I long to die if what thou speak’st speak not of remedy.” She is saying that her life right now is absolutely horrendous and she would rather die than be without Romeo and with Paris. Not getting married to the man your
