In Langston Hughes’ “Mother to Son” and in Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays” we can see what takes to be a good parent. In these poems, parents realize what parenthood involves and recognize their responsibilities. Their devotion and dedication makes clear the strong love and affection that parents feel towards their children. In Robert Hayden’s “Those winter Sundays” events in the story took place in the past which shows that speaker is recollecting his past experience. Speaker tells us that his father worked very hard all of the time:” Sundays too my father got up early.” Father is tired from work and is in pain. Yet this is not enough to keep him from necessary task of making a fire. Sunday is supposed to be the day for rest, but father’s love towards his family is so strong that he never stops. However, family didn’t understand his love and they never thanked him. The poem begins with the imagery that contributes to the feeling of winter: “Blueback cold” (1), “Cracked hands” (2), “Fires blaze” (3), “Cold splintering” (4). Winter symbolizes speaker’s inner feelings. The winter imagery is used to represent his cold heart toward his father. After that, the tone of the poem shift and imagery changes to positive imagery:” Rooms were warm” (1), “Polished”(2).”
