Comparing Lady Of Shalott By Tennyson And Waterhouse

Many artists create works of art based off of poetry because it provides the audience with a visual image. By having a visual image with the poem, it becomes easier to analyze art and poetry together because the reader can use both works to explore the author’s purpose. In 1842 Tennyson wrote the “Lady of Shalott,” and in 1888 John Waterhouse painted a picture illustrating Tennyson’s character, the Lady of Shalott. Although Tennyson and Waterhouse use different mediums, they both illustrate the position of a nineteenth century woman and Waterhouse uses images from the poem to recreate the mood. The main focus in John Waterhouse’s painting is the woman in the boat. The boat has a lantern hanging off the front and inside the boat are a few candles, a quilt that she wove spread out across the edge of the boat with the edges dragging the surface of the water. She is holding a chain in her hand to keep her from floating away. The woman is very pale, has red hair, and is wearing a medieval style dress with a white headband. She has a confused or lost look on her face. On the left side of the painting up on the river bank is a dark forest. A mountain lies on the horizon on the right side of …show more content…
In Waterhouse’s painting the boat has chains attached to it, which shows she does not have much freedom. The chains represent how society keeps her from expressing her passions. Like the painting, in the poem Tennyson uses chains to illustrate society's control over the Lady. He shows this by writing, ”She loosed the chain, and down she lay” (line 133). By laying down the chains, the Lady is letting go of her restraints and setting herself free. Aside from using chains to show how society traps her, Tennyson keeps the lady locked in a tower and is excluded from the outside world. Her being trapped in the tower shows that she has no

My initial reaction upon looking over Turner’s “Slave Ship” was that it appeared to be a beautiful landscape. The way the sky looks over the ship and the horizon line is really striking and powerful. However, as you start to look down you start to see the reason for the name of “Slave Ship”. Along the bottom of the painting you can see body parts of humans in the water. There are hands and feet, the foot on the bottom right has a shackle still attached to the ankle and there appear to be fish eating at the body.…

“Oh right….Well, did you know that Grant Wood came across this house in August of 1930 on a car ride which he was very mesmerized by the Gothic style of the house. He then started painting the house on a piece of cardboard. In his very first sketch, he drew male and female figures, with the man actually holding a rake. By doing this, it almost portrays a certain status that was held in society at that time. “ Anna “Wow. Impressive.”…

For this painting, he chose to display the end of the Tennyson’s poem where the Lady is leaving Shallot in the boat. In the Lady of Shallot, Waterhouse chose to focus the painting on a beautiful lady in a horrible situation, during the medieval period. He showed this by painting her face with such sorrow, knowing that her life is coming to an end fast. Other ways Waterhouse showed her sorrow, was by using the setting. The dark woods in the background and the long unkempt grass gives more emphasis to her despair.…

Throughout the years, beauty standards set in place have changed quite drastically, but there is an ever present appreciation for natural beauty. The enduring veneration of natural beauty is exhibited in the poems “Still to Be Neat” by Ben Jonson, and “She Walks in Beauty” by Lord Byron. In Jonson’s poem, the speaker regards manufactured beauty as uninspiring, as he believes that the scrupulous fashion habits that women upheld obscure the true, natural beauty that one may possess. The speaker praises natural good looks through the use of contrasting ideas; the painstaking beauty routine that women put themselves through daily, and the effortless effects of natural beauty on his own heart. Byron takes on a comparable theme in “She Walks in Beauty,”…

How far do you agree with the view that the women in Tennyson’s poems are presented as victims in a male world? In “The Lady of Shallot” Tennyson portrays the lady as somewhat of a victim by being trapped in her room weaving as if she leaves she will break an elusive curse she is under. In line 63 we see that “she hath no loyal knight and true” this implies to us that she is utterly alone in her world and whether she stays or leaves men have set up a world she is doomed to fail by growing old alone or by dying. We go through the poem thinking that she is content with living in solitude looking out at the world through her mirror but when Sir Lancelot suddenly appears in Part 3 we see her look out the window and break the curse, this shows…

The woman is dressed very nicely, she is wearing an emerald green coat with brown fur trim and a yellow cloche hat. The brim of her hat appears to have been pulled down, slightly covering her face, and she has on only one of her gloves.…

Also, the mixture of warm colors on top combined with primary and secondary colors give the painting a delicate effect particularly the three green brush strokes as it adds even more mystery to the painting. Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
