Both King and Socrates were outspoken men who stood by their beliefs despite others thoughts. While Socrates follows a strict guideline that under no circumstance is breaking laws okay; King has a slightly altered position stating, “One has not only legal but a moral responsibility to follow just laws,” he goes on, “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” When discussing the debate of just and unjust laws, King follows God’s standards, the “Natural Law. ”It would be erroneous to strictly base your standards on actual laws when laws are constantly changing. Both characters were confronted with similar situations; however, they are constructed differently in their gender, status and predominantly, their age. Even though both characters were vulnerable to bigotry, readers would feel more sympathy towards Boyd as he is an innocent child. On the contrary, Marian is a responsible and mature adult who is capable of standing up for her rights. However, Boyd is too young to comprehend Mrs Wilson’s subtle racist assumptions as she offers him ‘plenty of food’ so he can ‘work hard’ and old used clothing which he politely declined.…

At one point or another in one’s life we are shackled to something. That something may be a relationship, ourselves , or even power. Power is probably the one thing that us as humans think we will be forever in control of, but truthfully, we are never fully in control of situations or people and at any instant we can lose power to others. Just as Antigone from Antigone by Sophocles and Equality 7-2521 from Anthem by Ayn Rand struggles to defy power in order to regain it . Antigone was a level headed young woman who was born in a powerful family, but being a women made the power not as “accessible” to her.…

During the relative time of Odysseus and Antigone, a hero could be a man or a woman, someone who belonged to a divine ancestry, who was favored by the Gods, and showed great courage and strength in one’s actions. When reflecting upon heroes from the works we have read, the first two that came to my mind were Sophocles 's Antigone, and Homer’s Odysseus. These two characters exhibit heroic actions throughout both works, and stick to their ways by portraying perseverance and confidence. Sophocles’ Antigone is about a passionate woman who arrives in Thebes to see that both of her brothers are dead. Her brother, Polyneices, is not being granted a proper burial because the infamous leader, Kreon, has prohibited a burial for him to occur.…

In Siddhartha by Herman Hesse and Antigone by Sophocles, the main characters are both faced with conflicting values between the values of an individual and the values of the society. Siddhartha pursues an individual journey to enlightenment to find the universal meaning of the good life or Nirvana. Whereas, Antigone struggles in following state law’s versus following her own morals concerning the burial of her brother, Polyneices. The act of civil disobedience is often associated with nonviolence and simple demonstrations, however, that connotation is insufficient. Civil disobedience is the refusal of individuals or a group, to obey particular laws as a way of forcing the government to change (Civil Disobedience); therefore there is no singular manner in which it must be conducted. In a comparison of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Antigone, two different approaches are revealed. Though Dr. King and Antigone are strikingly similar in their practice of civil disobedience to illuminate fundamental problems within society and government. Where Dr. King is notoriously eloquent and forthright in addressing the issue of unjust laws and oppression, Antigone allows her unreserved passion and sense of indignation to govern her actions, which underscore the significance of the error in upholding man’s law over that of the gods.…

During class, we discussed the Alchemist in various ways, such as in English, Spanish, a graphic novel as well as an audio recording. Usually I would read the book in English, but doing this allowed me to expand on my preferences and discover different methods or reading a novel and how it changes or doesn’t change the way I perceive the book. When I attempted to read the book along with hearing the audio version, I found myself reading faster than it and wanted to mute it out. Although the speed of the audio was slow, the different voices used for the Alchemist and the Old King were interesting and effective. If I were to ever hear the audio version, I would put my full focus on the reader’s voice and not read the book simultaneously.…
