In my opinion, what separates Christianity from Catholicism, even with shared beliefs and sacred texts, is the role of the priest. In the Catholic faith, the priest can and does practice the job of absolving sins. Christianity believes that there is one Supreme Being, most commonly referred to as God although He has many names and who is comprised of three persons: God the Father, God the Son, Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit. Christianity believes that God created all things and that mankind is created in His (Three-In-One) image. Christianity believes that God desires right and meaningful relationship with His creation. Christianity believes that being disobedient to God and breaking moral laws, often considered as “missing the mark” or creating an “offense” is a sin. Christianity also believes that the consequence of sin is spiritual death resulting in an immediate broken relationship with God as well as eternal damnation. Christianity believes that all of mankind has and will sin, therefore is in need of redemption from the consequences sin and restored relationship with God. Christianity believes that Jesus Christ, who is and was both man and God, was born to the Virgin Mary and as an adult took on all the sins of mankind, like a lamb without blemish and was sacrificed on the cross so that those who believe would be delivered from eternal damnation and receive the gift of eternal salvation and right relationship with God. This was fully achieved when He was resurrected three days later after having defeated death. Christianity believes a person must accept these truths and also submit their lives to God, putting His will first in their lives, and with the power of the Holy Spirit, strive to live a life worthy of their profession of faith.
