Comparing Beowulf And The Hunger Games

Beowulf is a heroic figure in the Anglo-Saxon times; he is portrayed as someone who is loyal, courageous, and dependable. King Hrothgar of Denmark befriends Beowulf, when he sailed there to offer a fight with Grendel who is the demon of the kingdom. Hrothgar accepts him only because of what Beowulf has accomplished, and how he speaks of himself. Beowulf has set himself on a high pedestal as someone superior, and as a heroic figure. He speaks highly of himself, and boasts of all the challenges he has accepted; and accomplished. There is nothing he has done that he has failed with. It isn’t only in the Anglo-Saxon times that people find heroes there are heroes seen in the future, past, and present. In The Hunger Games, Katniss would be considered as a hero in the future, she never gives up on what she wants done, and found ways to be heard. Between Beowulf and Katniss I can see some similarities. But Beowulf brags about himself, and heroism; Katniss doesn’t she has a type of fear in her voice. …show more content…
In saying he will be in hand-to-hand combat with Grendel sets him in more glory than if he was just fighting Grendel with a sword, shield, and armor. Beowulf announces this because Unferth accuses Beowulf to be unworthy of his reputation due to the fact that one of his challenges was failed; and that he isn’t a true hero. The challenge he speaks of is a swimming challenge against Breca; Beowulf explains in depth how Unferth is wrong, because he had to fight to reach land due to the current; Breca was swept up to the land.
