Comparing Bastille Day, All Saints Day And Armistice Day

A tradition is the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on this way. Everyone has a tradition, whether it is family meal you do every Sunday night or throwing a baby shower for a mother-to-be. Every family, town, country has their own traditions. Today I am focusing on French holidays and traditions. Through-out learning about other countries holidays, we can compare and contrast them to ours in America. I will be discussing Bastille Day, All Saints Day, WW11 Day, and Armistice Day. I will explain how it was created, what the day will be like, and how the mood will be when celebrating the holiday. The first holiday is Bastille Day, also known as Fête Nationale. It is celebrated on July 14th. The Bastille is a medieval fortress and prison in Paris. Many people in France associated it with the harsh rule of the Bourbon Monarchy in the late 1700s. On July 14th, 1789, troops stormed the Bastille. This begun the French revolution. This was a way to celebrate the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in France. This holiday is like a big party all day. There are Military and civilian parades, musical performances, communal meals, dances, and a firework show at the end. People take this day pretty seriously. It is celebrated on November 1st. This is a solemnity tradition in which the Roman Catholic church and various Protestant denominations celebrate it. They celebrate it in the honor of all the saints, known and unknown. People usually refer our American “Halloween” and their “All Saints Day” kind of similar. They are both similar because of paganism. In France, Many Christians honor the life of their deceased relatives and the saints. They visit church services and place flowers on family graves.
