How are these two parent’s different? How are they similar? The parents I interviewed were extremely different but also similar in some ways. Parent A’s son is 18 years old and suffers from dyslexia and ADHD. Parent A is very straight forward and has reached out for help multiple times. From dyslexia programs to autistic programs, parent A has been very hands on in her sons learning inside and outside of the classroom. She has three other children, a husband, and a full time job. Parent A has lived in Florida her whole life. She is always observing her son and notices when things begin to change. For example, one summer her son went to a program called Metronome and within those two weeks, she knew her son was learning different strategies than he had ever learned. Parent B just moved to the United States two years ago from Columbia and has a daughter who’s in fifth grade at a beginner ESOL level. Parent B is more laid back than parent A and thinks her daughter will learn English over time. She has a part-time job as an LPN seems to be extremely tired. Parent B does not speak English very well. She only speaks to her daughter in Spanish and does not really work on her English speaking skills. Parent B is not as assertive as parent A and does not think her daughter will be set back from her English speaking skills. However, these parents have a few things in common. They both love their child unconditionally and seem to want the best for their daughter/sons life. Every Sunday is reserved for church and family time. They also seem to have a stable home environment and have established structured rules inside and outside of their home. Which sources of information did the adult use to answer these questions? For example, did the adult rely on research? On systematic observation? On personal opinion? Parent A used research and personal opinion to answer her questions. Through various programs and dyslexia seminars, she has gained most of her knowledge through her research on how to help her son. She also used personal opinion when talking about some of the challenges her son is facing and the most important things that parents should teach their children. Parent A seemed very educated on dyslexia and ADHD and has put in countless hours trying to help her son be successful. Parent B answered most of the questions using personal opinion. When she spoke about her daughter and her strengths and weaknesses, she was very vague with her responses. For example, when I asked her about her daughter’s weaknesses she said that her daughter does not struggle with many things but she is very shy and does not like to do homework. Parent B did not elaborate with her answers and explain how her daughter struggles when doing her homework or how she is feeling during that time. To what degree do the answers reflect family background, culture, or other life experiences? For example, does the adult rely on beliefs passed down from parents or other family members? Does the adult refer to conditions in the neighborhood or community that influences thinking about children? Parent A’s answers reflected her family background, culture, and life experiences. …show more content…
When explaining which important things should be taught to her son she incorporated her values culturally and based on their family background. For instance, Parent A’s husband has dyslexia and ADHD which allowed her to understand certain situations more in depth because her husband struggled with the same problems. She heavily relies on beliefs passed down from parents and family members. When dealing with her son, she would call her mother-in-law and asked which strategies worked with her husband and how he overcame his obstacles. Parent A used her family for support and guidance through her son’s education. Lastly, she briefly spoke about the community she lives in or her neighborhood. She explained how her family is financially stable and lives in a gated community. Overall, parent A’s answers reflected a lot on her family background, cultural beliefs, and beliefs passed down from her
