From the introduction above of the two New Year’s Celebration, we see that there are various similarities between the two. The major aspect of the both that is the significance of food. They both place a special emphasis on food or a feast. Families from both hemispheres will go all out trying to cook the perfect meal for that day. It is imperative to point out here, however, that the day of the feast is different. While in Grenada the feast takes place on New Year’s Day, in China is takes place on the eve of New Year’s. Nevertheless, unlike in the Caribbean, the Chinese uses the last aspect of the meal as a symbol of abundance, something that is not done in Grenada or the Caribbean. The preparations, the spirituality, and the focus of family seem to be a collective theme between two. It may be a result of the collectivist aspect of both societies. As we spoke about previously, the main focus of each is the family, a time for the family to come together, especially those who have not been home. Can this be a result of industrialization, cultural assimilation, or can it be a consequence of becoming more educated? It is hard to say for sure, but it can be possible that these factors play a part. If we look at society now and the way society was a century or two ago, the difference is outstanding. Traditions were held more closely by both societies because tradition was all that was known. As time goes on, however, the influences of the outside world have become a distraction to individuals. Persons will rather watch television or text their friends than prepare themselves for the new year or even to spend time with the family.
In Grenada, there are numerous parties that occur on or around New Years’ time. A way of promoters and companies to make a fast money. This tradition of partying has unfortunately become popular amongst the younger generations.
